Weir removal – contractors Camco are removing the weir at Gawler River junction this week. It’s great to know that native fish trying to make it upstream will now have a fighting chance of survival.
Pygmy bluetongue lizards. We’ve discovered that the world’s original record of the pygmy blue tongue lizard (nationally endangered species) was at Gawler in early 1860s – Richard Schomburgk of Gawler/Botanic Gardens fame sent 6 specimens to Berlin Museum. Thought to be extinct but rediscovered/found since mid 1990s in small patches from Auburn to Terowie in grasslands/grassy woodlands. This is pretty big news and if we could find some still surviving around Gawler that would be amazing. The lizard people have had a look at Cobblers Creek as a potential site but no luck.
The Clare Burra people who look after these things have some field day work in Burra and Clare areas on Mon 18 and Tues 19 Feb (prime time now while young are born and paddocks are fairly bare). Any interest contact Adrian 8522 4363. Transport should be available on one day.
